WHALE SEASON ON THE WEST COAST

Escape the crowds of Hermanus and head up the West Coast for whale season, where the vibrant Namaqualand flower season coincides with the arrival of our majestic whales. Witness the annual migration of these gentle giants as they leave their Antarctic home to mate and give birth in the warmer waters along the South African coast.

The common whales seen include Southern Right Whales which are known for their distinctive V-shaped blowholes and breaching behaviour, as well as Humpback Whales with their acrobatic displays. Bryde’s Whales, occasionally spotted, have streamlined bodies and are skilled feeders. Orcas, or Killer Whales, are less commonly observed but are highly intelligent and striking in appearance.
